Online Swiss banking — key facts

Digital-first personal banksNeon, Yapeal, Zak (Cler)

Neon, Yapeal, and Zak (Bank Cler) offer fully digital onboarding via smartphone for Swiss residents and EU/EEA citizens with a Swiss address. Identity verification via VideoIdent (online video call with a bank agent) or a recognised third-party video-KYC provider. IBAN issued immediately or within 24 hours.

Digital private bankingAlpian

Alpian (FINMA-licensed) targets the affluent segment with a mobile-first platform. Supports multi-currency accounts and investment mandates. Full digital onboarding with video verification. Primarily aimed at EU/EEA clients and Swiss residents.

VideoIdent (online KYC)Available at most digital banks

VideoIdent is a FINMA-accepted identity verification method. The applicant connects via video call with a trained agent who verifies the passport and conducts a live screen check. Used by Neon, Yapeal, PostFinance (for digital onboarding flows), and UBS for certain account types. Replaces in-branch identity verification for eligible clients.

Corporate online banking (business)UBS key4, PostFinance, Raiffeisen

UBS key4 business, PostFinance Business, and Raiffeisen offer digital onboarding for Swiss-incorporated companies. The process includes online submission of company documents (Commercial Register extract, articles of association, ID documents of beneficial owners) followed by a compliance review. Timeline: 7–30 days for corporate accounts.

IBAN issuance speedImmediate to 24h (digital banks)

Digital-first banks (Neon, Yapeal, Zak) issue a Swiss IBAN within the onboarding flow — sometimes immediately after VideoIdent verification. Traditional banks (UBS, Raiffeisen) issue IBAN after compliance review completion, typically 7–30 days for corporate accounts.

eKYC and non-residentsEU/EEA easier; others more complex

EU and EEA citizens applying for digital Swiss bank accounts benefit from streamlined VideoIdent flows. Non-EU/EEA applicants — including those from the UK, US, and non-AEOI jurisdictions — face higher scrutiny. Most purely digital banks require a Swiss address for non-residents, limiting access to those without local substance.

Limitations vs. branch bankingDocument originals may be required

Fully digital onboarding handles standard KYC well, but complex beneficial-ownership structures, foreign company shareholders, high-risk source-of-funds profiles, or private banking relationships typically require certified/notarised document originals and, in some cases, an in-person meeting or courier submission. Digital onboarding does not guarantee approval.

esisuisse deposit protectionCHF 100,000 per depositor per bank

All FINMA-licensed Swiss banks (including Neon's host bank, Alpian, Bank Cler) are esisuisse members. The CHF 100,000 limit covers deposits. Note: Yapeal has operated under FINMA as a fintech licence holder — verify the exact deposit protection status directly with the institution.

Neon — free current account, Swiss residents

Neon offers a free CHF current account with a Swiss Mastercard. Digital onboarding in minutes via smartphone. Requires a Swiss address and valid EU/EEA or Swiss ID. No minimum balance. Popular with freelancers and early-stage Swiss companies for personal accounts. Not a standalone corporate account product.

Yapeal — IBAN in 10 minutes

Yapeal (operated under FINMA fintech licence) targets the digital-first segment. CHF IBAN issued within the onboarding flow. VideoIdent verification. Multi-currency transfers available. Swiss address required. Verify current deposit protection status directly with Yapeal — fintech licence holders have different esisuisse coverage conditions versus full BankG banks.

Zak (Bank Cler) — backed by a licensed bank

Zak is the digital offering of Bank Cler, a fully licensed FINMA bank. Accounts are backed by Bank Cler's full banking licence and esisuisse protection (CHF 100,000). Swiss address required for onboarding. Savings and current accounts. Strong mobile UX.

UBS key4 business — corporate digital onboarding

UBS key4 business is UBS's digital onboarding channel for Swiss-incorporated companies (AG and GmbH). Document upload, VideoIdent, and compliance review are handled online. The most accessible large-bank digital corporate onboarding platform for foreign-owned Swiss companies. Timeline: 7–30 days after document submission.

Digital onboarding: what applies to Swiss company accounts

For Swiss-incorporated companies (AG or GmbH), digital onboarding is available at UBS key4 business, PostFinance Business, and Raiffeisen. The process involves uploading the Commercial Register extract, articles of association, identification documents of all beneficial owners and signatories, and completing a FINMA-standard beneficial-ownership declaration (CDB 20 Forms A and K). Once documents are submitted, a compliance review is conducted — typically 7 to 30 days. Foreign-owned companies with complex shareholder structures may face extended review periods or requests for additional documentation. Goldblum & Partner AG prepares documentation packages that reduce the number of back-and-forth requests.

Corporate digital onboarding: 7–30 days review

Non-EU/EEA applicants: Enhanced due diligence applies

Step-by-Step Process

How to open a Swiss bank account online
in five steps

01

Choose your bank and account type

Select a digital bank appropriate for your residency status and needs. EU/EEA residents: Neon, Yapeal, or Zak. Swiss-incorporated companies: UBS key4 business or PostFinance Business. Non-residents without Swiss company: consider private banking if HNW, or EMIs as a practical interim.

02

Prepare your KYC documentation

Gather: valid passport/EU ID (individual), proof of Swiss or home-country address, source of funds declaration (for significant deposits), and for companies: Commercial Register extract, articles of association, and beneficial owner IDs. Ensure all documents are current and not expired.

03

Complete VideoIdent (online identity verification)

Connect via video call with the bank's verification agent. Have your original passport ready. The agent will ask you to hold it up to the camera, confirm details, and may ask questions about the purpose of your account. The session typically takes 5–15 minutes.

04

Submit application and await compliance review

Upload documents via the bank's secure portal or app. For personal digital accounts: approval may be near-immediate. For corporate accounts: 7–30 day compliance review. You may receive requests for additional documentation — respond promptly to avoid delays.

05

Receive IBAN and activate online banking

Once approved, your Swiss IBAN (CH...) is issued. Configure online banking access, set up two-factor authentication, and integrate with any accounting software (e.g., Abacus, Bexio) or payroll systems as required.
